Besides being the law, a rabies vaccine is important to keep your pet and you safe from potential rabies infection.  The sad reality of rabies is that it has no cure.  The other sad news is that if your pet happens to contract this horrible virus, they are able to transmit it to you, your family or other people.

For cats, we use a 1 year vaccine manufactured by BI, its proven very safe and effective.  For cats the worry with any injection, is a complication known as “Injection Site Sarcoma“.  PureVax Rabies vaccine is the only fully adjuvant-free feline vaccine, what that means to you is less chance of a sarcoma developing after this particular vaccine.  These sarcomas will appear as lumps and can develop anywhere from 4 weeks to 10 years after injection – for this reason we recommend getting any lump evaluated by our doctors as soon as possible.

For dogs, we use a 3 year vaccine after the first rabies vaccine which is only good for 1 year.  After the initial rabies vaccination, you will need to get a booster in 1 year and then every vaccine will be good for 3 years after that.

Keeping your pet and family safe from life-threatening conditions is a top priority for Dr. Love and her staff at Moraine Grove Veterinary Clinic.
