We know that bringing in a fecal sample is not one of the joys of pet parenthood. However, an intestinal parasite screen is so important for both your dog or cat’s health but also the health of your human family. External parasites, like fleas and ticks, can be seen with the naked eye but internal parasites cannot usually be seen. The intestinal parasite screen is the only way to find these kinds of parasites. When these parasites infect dogs and cats, they can cause diarrhea, bloody stool, decreased appetite, and weight loss but also often show no outward signs. Even without signs, your pets can spread these parasites to other animals and to human family members. A thankfully uncommon, but possible, result of one of these parasites (roundworms) is vision loss in people. This is due to an abnormal migration of the worm. So next time you bring in your furry friend, don’t forget to bring that sample along so we can help keep your whole family healthy.
